Today, their numbers have dwindled to slightly below 20,000. Their average age is 71. And they are dying off at a pace of about one a day. Ms. Bombardier gathered the first-person accounts of these women—women who worked in education, social work and hospital care—on what they are experiencing today and on the future that awaits them in a society in which they are fast becoming an endangered species.
